- 1 Choose a PC case that will be appropriate for your professional computer. In many cases this will be a tower type case, since that type of case design will allow you to add additional components later on. With a tower PC you will also have room to work and to make repairs. A slimline case can be a good option as well, but you may be limited in your upgrade potential, and it will be more difficult to work in the case.
- 2 Choose the highest capacity hard drive you can afford. Even if you do not think you will need all that space, you may be surprised at how much storage capacity you need in a few years. Each new operating system takes more room than the previous one did, so if you plan to upgrade to the latest version of Windows, you may need a large capacity hard drive for that. Hard drive prices have fallen quite sharply in recent years, so you can probably afford a drive with at least a 500GB capacity.
- 3 Make sure you purchase a fast network card for your computer. Choosing a gigabit card over a slower 100MB card will help your computer perform faster on the network and help your staff get more done.
- 4 Make sure you choose a motherboard that can handle the components you need to include. For instance you may want to make sure your motherboard supports firewire, and USB 2.0, which will allow you to take advantage of faster USB devices.
- 5 Max out your memory by installing as much RAM as the motherboard can handle. The more memory you have in place, the faster your computer will perform, and professional computers will need to function very quickly. Maxing out the RAM right from the start will also eliminate the need to upgrade later.
