Nexenta Systems and Zmanda debut next generation backup and recovery offering

Zmanda Inc., a provider of open source based back-up solutions, and Nexenta Systems Inc., a provider of OpenStorage solutions, announced Wednesday availability of jointly developed and certified back-up solutions. Amanda Enterprise (AE), Zmanda’s network back-up product, now natively supports backup of NexentaStor powered storage appliances, as well as back-up of heterogeneous environments to NexentaStor.

Newly released Zmanda NexentaStor Client provides fast and efficient back-ups of data stored on NexentaStor. Data ships directly from NexentaStor to the Amanda Enterprise backup server, saving valuable network bandwidth. Zmanda Nexenta Client leverages various ZFS and zVol backup methods and is configurable to meet the needs of a specific workload. Zmanda NexentaStor Client also provides direct backups of raw volumes (zvols). For example, if VMware based VMs are using volumes stored on Nexenta (accessed via iSCSI or Fibre Channel), Zmanda Nexenta Client provides raw backups of these volumes (while maintaining thin provisioning) without installing any client software in the VMs.
In addition, NexentaStor has been formally certified as the destination of back-up files for the Amanda Enterprise server. Amanda Enterprise can perform network-wide back-up of heterogeneous systems, including Linux, Windows, Solaris and OS X-based systems onto NexentaStor. NexentaStor, built on ZFS technology, eliminates redundant back-ups, reduces business downtime and ensures critical information is always protected and can be restored in seconds. With it, corporate compliance and rules of governance for data retention are managed easily. Users can reuse information across lines of business and industry. As well, the entire back-up environment can be managed from a single console.
“Zmanda provides extremely cost-effective and simple to use back-up solutions for our customers who prize openness and efficiency,” said Evan Powell, CEO of Nexenta. “Optimized back-ups of NexentaStor storage from Zmanda will enable our users to realize even more value from our platform.”
“NexentaStor provides open, enterprise-class storage based on ZFS, making it a perfect storage repository for Amanda Enterprise,” said Chander Kant, CEO of Zmanda. “With this integration, our customers will find NexentaStor a scalable and robust choice for storing their back-up files.”
Amanda Enterprise is an enhanced and supported version of the world’s most popular open source back-up and recovery software. Amanda Enterprise allows users to back-up, archive, and recover servers, workstations, desktops and business-critical applications across a network. The back-up data and archives can be stored on disks, tape, optical devices, or storage clouds such as Amazon S3.
The Nexenta Client for Amanda Enterprise is available immediately for $300.
